Kids-fi

Client: I worked on this project while taking the UXTree mentorship program. I picked a project I cared about and developed it from 0 to 1 with the help of some great mentors.

🏢 UXTree Project

👩🏽‍💻👨🏽‍💼 Myself and I

Background

Growing up, i wished I learned what I know about money much earlier. There seems to be little preparation and financial education to equip children. And help them gain financial literacy early,

This is what Kids-fi aims to be, A fun learning app to teach kids about money and financial literacy.

Competitor Analysis

I carried out some desk research and found some existing products that solved similar problems. This was mostly to learn from them and improve on what they had done well.

Looking at two products closely, Juno and GoHenry.

GoHenry

Provides kids with topics like budgeting, money safety etc.

Kids get paid for chores to teach them about work and earning money

Bite-sized videos and quizzes on money and financial literacy.

Parental controls and visibility.

Juno

Basically, duolingo for money.

Contains built-in saving and budgeting tools,

more tailored to adults.

In-depth courses and videos, provided by experts.

Partnerships feature for brands and other business for ad revenue generation.

User Interviews

After my competitor analysis, I went on to user interviews. Setting my target demography.

Parents with 1-3 kids.

With kids between 5-11.

Mostly moms

Relatively tech savvy.

Then I defined my interview goals, which where:

  • Finding out how parents felt about the app idea.

  • Understanding the parent’s context and environment.

  • Discovering what they really care about, and their non negotiables.

  • Finding out their pain points, and opportunities in solving them.

Setting these goals helped me frame my interview questions. I spoke with 7 parents, getting some interesting first hand feedback from them.

With learnings and observations during the interviews, I created an empathy map to further present and understand the thoughts, actions and feelings of the parents.

Persona

Having more context and insights into the parents' experience, motivations and fears, I was able to create a more concise persona, Linda.

Linda

32 year old, mother of two.

Her life mostly revolves around work and

taking care of her two girls ages 4 and 9.

She would love to give her girls the best tools and knowledge to prepare them for life, even though she doesn’t have a lot of time on her hands.

She gets overwhelmed with the demands of motherhood sometimes, but seeing her girls smile make it all worth it.

I then framed a user needs statement that captured what the parents would like to achieve with this app.
